Conditions

A Chronic Refractory Cough –
A Specialist MDT Approach

Chronic refractory cough is a complex condition that persists despite appropriate investigation and treatment. Management follows British Thoracic Society cough guidelines and focuses on multidisciplinary care.

You will undergo a detailed assessment and examination to identify and treat contributory factors. This will include where appropriate a CT scan, lung function testing and blood testing. It may be that an ENT surgeon needs to assess your upper airways in more detail . Once we have identified any causes and treated any contributory factors some people are still left with a cough and these persistent symptoms are recognised as cough hypersensitivity.

Treatments

We provide an MDT-Led Management for this condition.

Respiratory Physiotherapy

Dr Hurt and Dr Messenger will review your case and imaging with our consultant radiologists and will decide on the best strategy for management . Respiratory Physiotherapy supports breathing pattern retraining and airway optimisation.

Speech and Language Therapy

Gefapixant

Gefapixant, a P2X3 receptor antagonist, has MHRA approval for refractory chronic cough but is not yet routinely available within the NHS. Its role is discussed where appropriate.
